Slotslyngen Navy Gin from Bornholm Distillery
On Sunday, January 14 2024, we released a limited-edition Navy Gin in honour of our new king, HM King Frederik 10.
When Queen Margrethe announced her abdication on New Year's Eve 2023, we had an exciting idea at Bornholm Distillery. Inspired by the rich history and tradition of the Danish royal family, we decided to create a gin befitting our new king. Our vision? A powerful and exclusive gin with deep roots in history, mirroring the strength the Danish monarchy. Taking a cue from Crown Prince Frederik's service in the Navy's Frogman Corps, it was clear – our creation had to be a Navy gin.
Botanicals from Slotslyngen
We have made a handcrafted Navy Strength Gin, with meticulously selected botanicals from the iconic Slotslyngen near Hammershus on Bornholm. In this open landscape, juniper bushes and heather thrive amidst the rocks. Every autumn, we handpick juniper berries, wild apples, quinces, blackberries, and heather blossoms, soaking in the breathtaking atmosphere and overlooking the Baltic Sea. These ingredients always play a crucial role in the production of our acclaimed Slotslyngen gin. The first gin we introduced in 2017, which was awarded the prestigious GOLD at the 2021 World Spirits Trophy. In 2024 we have created a special navy strength version of this top gin.
The Story Behind Navy Strength Gin
Before 1970, the sailors in the British navy, were entitled to a daily ration of gin. To ensure the captain didn't dilute their gin with water, sailors tested it by mixing gunpowder with the spirit. If the wet gunpowder failed to ignite, it meant the alcohol percentage was too low. To meet the standards of a Navy Strength Gin, this new gin will have a minimum alcohol content of 57%. To secure a gin with a with a powerful and intense flavour, we'll also be adjusting the quantities of botanical in the original recipe for our top gin.
Limited Edition Release
Our Navy Strength Gin is a true collector's item, with a very limited number of bottles available. Only 134 numbered bottles was produced. The pre-sale opened up the moment Frederik was announced King of Denmark. Check out our webshop to see if this unique gin is still available.
